Debit card surcharge crackdown

On October 15, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the federal government was giving the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) $2.1 million in funding to "tackle excessive surcharges" and reduce payment fees.

The government flagged it would likely ban surcharges for debit card payments, which has been reported as potentially saving Australians about $500 million a year.

Credit cards would not be affected by that change.

The changes will come into effect January 1, 2026.
